Merino wool – what material is it and where is it used?

Merino wool – what is it?

This type of wool is obtained from a specific breed of sheep called merino. Originally from New Zealand, they hail from mountainous regions characterized by a highly variable climate, with hot summers and frosty winters. As a result, the fleece that merino sheep have developed over the course of their evolution protects them perfectly from the oppressive cold, yet doesn't cause discomfort in hot weather. It's no wonder that with such properties, merino wool has become a hot topic in the clothing industry! Merino fibers are exceptionally fine, especially compared to traditional wool. Therefore, clothes made from it are significantly softer and lighter. While regular wool is rough and irritating when in contact with human skin, wool made from merino fleece is pliable and non-scratchy. This means you can enjoy incomparably greater comfort and pleasure from wearing garments made from it. Merino wool clothing combines comfort with excellent quality. They're easy to care for and retain their properties for a very long time, including their excellent appearance. Choose their elegant, practical design, and you certainly won't regret it.

What clothes are made from merino wool?

Traditional wool clothing is primarily associated with warm clothing and winter weather. Is it the same with merino wool? Absolutely. Clothing stores offer plenty of warm and fashionable sweaters and sweatshirts made from this material. It's also worth checking out all sorts of accessories, such as gloves, socks, scarves, and hats. If you value elegance, you won't have trouble finding stylish clothes made from merino wool. Coats and jackets made from this fiber are particularly noteworthy. Interestingly, this type of wool also works well in clothing designed for warmer seasons. Shops offer a wide selection of summer blouses and lightweight dresses made from merino, as well as more casual clothing such as T-shirts. The material's excellent thermal properties allow body heat to escape in the summer, preventing overheating.

Merino wool – properties

What else is worth knowing about merino wool? It has a number of positive properties. Clothes made from it are excellent at absorbing moisture from the inside and drawing it out. This allows you to enjoy the comfort of dry skin, even if your clothes are damp. Merino wool also offers excellent thermal insulation while maintaining high breathability. Regardless of the weather, you'll feel comfortable in it, and the temperature won't be oppressive. If you value clothes that you can wear for a long time, you'll definitely love merino wool. They're very elastic and resistant to stretching, quickly returning to their original shape and retaining it for years. Importantly, clothes made from merino wool are hypoallergenic, making them suitable for allergy sufferers and asthmatics. This is thanks to the lanolin found in the fiber in large quantities. This prevents merino wool clothing from attracting dust and mites, which are common causes of allergies. Other advantages of this material include high UV resistance, flame resistance, and antistatic properties.

Merino wool – how to wash clothes made from it?

Clothes made from merino wool are very easy to care for. This is largely due to the previously mentioned lanolin. Its high content means the materials don't stain easily and are relatively easy to clean. Furthermore, merino wool has self-cleaning properties, and much of the dirt is removed through the natural fiber regeneration process resulting from the material's simple contact with oxygen. For these reasons, washing merino wool is not always advisable. If you want to refresh clothes made from it, simply air them out. You don't have to worry about unpleasant odors, as this material is resistant to absorbing them. This includes both external odors and body odors. Use a washing machine if your merino wool clothes become very dirty. Clothes made from this fabric should be washed at a temperature no higher than 30 degrees Celsius. It's also a good idea to reduce the spin cycle to a minimum or turn it off completely. If you follow these recommendations, you can be sure that you will enjoy your stylish woolen clothes for a very long time!
