Viscose – what is it and what properties does it have?

Viscose – what material is it?

This fabric is a type of so-called artificial or semi-synthetic fiber. However, don't let the name fool you. Viscose is produced from natural raw materials, specifically wood pulp containing cellulose. It is processed using complex chemical processes, the end result of which is the fiber. The "artificiality" in the name refers to the processing methods, not the viscose's origin. Is it an eco-friendly material? Yes and no. While its origin is natural, the production method may raise questions. However, with the development of technology and the modernization of production plants, viscose production is becoming increasingly environmentally friendly. There are different types of viscose, depending on how it is woven. In clothing stores, you can find it primarily in woven and knitted fabrics. This means you can easily choose an outfit made of this material to suit your personal preferences. Viscose as a fabric has little stretch, but as a knit, it is flexible enough to be practically wrinkle-free.

Viscose vs. cotton – learn the differences

Cotton is a natural material that is particularly popular during the summer and warmer seasons. It's made from cellulose, just like viscose. For this reason, both fabrics have very similar properties and perform well in similar conditions. Both cotton and viscose ensure adequate air circulation and prevent excessive sweating. Wearing clothes made from these materials means you won't have to worry about them sticking to your skin. Both fabrics are very pleasant to the touch and soft, making them definitely worth having in your wardrobe. So what are the differences? Viscose, unlike standard natural fibers, is more resistant to sunlight. It doesn't fade as quickly, and its fibers don't weaken. Another undoubted advantage is that it's usually simply cheaper!

Viscose – properties

Viscose fabrics offer a number of advantages. Knitwear is highly elastic, allowing it to fit perfectly to the body. This makes it ideal for tight-fitting garments designed to accentuate the female figure. The fabrics are significantly less stretchy, making them suitable for flowing and flowing garments, such as summer dresses, jumpsuits, and shorts. Although viscose creases easily in woven form, ironing is quick and easy, so you won't have any trouble restoring it to its perfect condition. To minimize this problem, it's worth choosing patterned and colorful fabrics, where wrinkles won't be as noticeable. Viscose is often used as a blend with other fibers, and can be found in combination with wool, polyester, and even silk. Its addition makes fabrics more pleasant to the touch and improves breathability. Due to its smoothness and shimmer, viscose is also called artificial silk. Its appearance allows for an aesthetic effect with a touch of luxury, at very affordable prices.

Viscose – washing and ironing

Clothes made from this material can last a very long time and retain their beautiful, original appearance throughout. However, for this to happen, you need to take proper care of them and remember the basic care instructions. It's not difficult, and you can certainly manage. It's worth knowing that viscose is delicate and quite stretchy when in contact with water. Therefore, hand washing is often recommended for this type of material. Despite this, you can also safely use a washing machine, but remember to select the appropriate program and limit the spin speed. Viscose is best washed at a temperature no higher than 30 degrees Celsius. Because viscose often comes in various material blends, recommendations may vary slightly from garment to garment. Always check the care labels and follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Also, avoid washing this material with thick, stiff clothing, which could damage it. When it comes to ironing, you should avoid using a very hot iron. Lowering the temperature will slightly prolong the process, but it will ensure the fabric won't be damaged.
